Or does sunshine bring daffodils?

Cold has settled in for this mid-April day. It's too cold and too wet to turn the earth for planting but at least these daffodils brighten things up a bit.

Winter was hard for our fruit production, especially for the blackberries that were decimated by the rabbit population. Snow drifts allowed access over the fencing and the rabbits feasted on the blackberries as well as the apple trees.

We may get a handful of blackberries this year but, for the most part, it will be a lost year.

For the apples, we found a source for the Ambrosia variety at a decent price and we added them as well as a couple of Fuji to the grove.

As we are working towards a more balanced pH for the fruit production, we're encountering more of these than in years past:

 This means we may be able to have some apples for ourselves instead of the raccoons taking them all (maybe.)

Wildflower Wednesday, Tangled up in Blue

From the wildflowers that we planted earlier this year

Blue Iris

Irises were my grandmother's favorite flowers. She had dozens of both solid and multi-colors growing west of her house at the top of the hill. This blue iris came from our neighbor who has since passed away when her parents owned our house. We transplanted several along the south gate at the farm and this year, the irises have been late.

Flowers on Friday, Yellows

Not sure what the first yellow flower is but the bottom is an iris that we planted from a neighbor's stock.

It will take more than flowers to brighten up my upcoming week, however, I hope it will brighten up yours instead. May all my readers have a bright and enlightened weekend.

Friday flowers if for just a day (or two)

A bit of melancholia is knocking and attempting to settle in. I know why but it must be the way it is sometimes.

If I share a couple of flowers with my readers, maybe the melancholy won't spread to any of you.
I don't know the names of these two and yes, I should take the time to find out. I will someday.

I hope you all have a happy day today, so I offer up a couple of flowers for today and the weekend. Again these are from a group of wildflowers from outside the cabin. Not sure of the names, I'll figure it out someday. In the mean time, we could just admire them.

Life on hold, recovery time

As we are hoping for a speedy recover in our son's recent surgery, I neglected to give him flowers.

Instead, here's a couple of wildflowers from the farm that I'll share with my readers in hopes of brightening up their day and weekend.

Flowers for the weekend

The harshest winters bring forth the most beautiful flowers.

No matter the troubles that one is going through, keep in mind the beauty that will come out from the other side.

Here are a couple of flowers that I hope will brighten up your weekend.

Maximilian sunflower

This ubiquitous flower (or weed in some agricultural opinions) in fields, ditches and pastures is a Maximilian sunflower.

If these plants will do a better job of "choking" out noxious plant species, I may take a closer look at planting them instead of waiting for them to naturally spread.

Friday Flowers - Lily of the Valley

From the homestead, these tiny fragrant bell-shaped flowers fill any room with a reminder of spring. These, along with the tulips, have stuck around a little longer than usual.

But then, it seems like this has been an unusual spring.

With more rain on the way, may these brighten up everyone's weekend.
