Wednesday wildlife, count the pheasants

I counted 5:

I finished picking sweetcorn and took a break in the truck while it was drizzling. These emerged from the oats field and continued along their way.

Our pheasant numbers have increased each year since we bought the acreage four years ago. Sorry, but someone didn't get the embed code (I swear I tested).

  1. We were bush hogging after August 1 (Supposedly safe for ground nesting birds) and a turkey hen flew out ahead of me. I got off and started looking, and Susan found the nest first, with about a dozen eggs. We left an island of weeds around it, but a coon or possum found it before they hatched. Hate coons.

  2. We've had better numbers each year. I've left a lot of cover around the pond and in the south section of walnuts for the past two summers. Partly because I waste time planting fruit trees, berries, and assorted other jobs on the acreage. Bonus is that the wild parsnip doesn't grow well in there.

Yea, I hate those vermin, too.
