It's almost time for sandbagging

The English River is out of its banks for the third time this year after an overnight deluge of 4 1/2 inches in about 3 hours. 3-4 inches fell over much of the watershed above Kalona after midnight on 8/8.

The acreage is out of the river's flood plain and the creek to the east was still in its banks but many field tile were full and a couple of ponds north of us were over their spillways.

We were a little short of rain, but not this short.

  1. The Little Wabash and Skillet Fork valleys in So. IL have a lot of dead corn and late beans this year because of flooding. I get plenty of calls because of sick looking oaks this year; anthracnose, but it resembles herbicide damage.

  3. This is one of the latest floods in the summer that I've had to worry about. Usually it's in June, but the middle of August? At least the pond is looking better but hasn't recovered fully. The data comes from rivergages.com

Some good looking corn and beans are under water between Kalona and North English right now.
