I know there are many of you in the midst of severe drought and if I could change the jet stream, I would.
Earlier this week, we had nearly three inches of rain in an hour and with the soaked soil, our sump pumps at the homestead were working overtime.
They were working overtime because one had a stuck float and wouldn't shut off and the second one didn't have enough umpfh to get the water out of the house.
An easy fix for the first pump but with the second one, I decided to get a replacement and then look at it to fix later.
Big Box Store would be open before our local hardware store, so I made the 30 mile trek after checking they had several dozen in stock.
I headed to the aisle and there were two guys unloading a pallet of pumps directly onto the floor, they didn't bother to put them on the shelf.
I squeezed past an older gentleman desperately screaming into his phone, "Which size should I get!?"
"It started as soon as we opened," the clerk said while he was unloading the next pump.
I grabbed a pump and ran to the exit as the man on the phone cried, "I don't know which one to get!"
Pour, lost soul.
I reached the checkout and glanced around to see customers pushing carts with pumps of all kinds: sump pumps, trash pumps with coils of 3" hoses, any brand that was available.
I glanced back to the man on the phone but he was swallowed up by the crowd in a scene reminiscent of any Black Friday TV sale, except these people were trying to save their homes from water, not saving 50% off.
I think of that man and wonder if he made it out with what he needed or if he was stuck with the left-over hand pump on the shelf and am glad I was taught to think, evaluate, and make a decision.
Here's a couple of pics from the full pond. Only the 4th time it filled since we got the place.
