While working on the cabin, I looked up to find a turkey vulture circling overhead. I usually take it as a sign that he is waiting for me, but I took the time to grab the camera. He climbed up and I waited until it crossed into view.
Vultures are a welcome sign of spring, and I always enjoy seeing them. Eagles are showing up in more places every year, and I had to slow down yesterday for a family that bailed out of their car on Hwy 15 to take pictures of an eagle working on roadkill. We are also pulling ticks out of ourselves and the dogs, and Susan smelled mushrooms up around the north barn this week. The turkeys and squirrels probably have them cleaned up by now.
I think the turkey vulture number are higher this year but I have nothing concrete to go on. In years past I'd see groups of 10 or more but his year I see a lot of singles and pairs.
If this year is any indication, the pheasant numbers should be even higher. I scared up 6 walking along the north fence and almost stepped on another. A rooster flew by us into the brush east of the apple trees during a break time. He did his best to call the hens in.
I've yet to find mushrooms on the acreage but with the weather warming up, I'm as optimistic as a Cubs fan during spring training.
